Migrating 2D to VR storytelling for professional settings
The world was moving toward immersion, but no one knew how to speak its language
We live in a world where ideas must travel fast. Whether you’re teaching, selling, or simply sharing knowledge, the ability to communicate clearly and memorably is no longer optional but essential. For decades, we’ve relied on two-dimensional slides: static images, bullet points, and linear narratives that fit neatly into a PowerPoint deck. They work, but they’re also limiting. They flatten complex concepts, force users to scroll through endless pages, and rarely hold attention beyond the first few minutes. As VR headsets moved from labs to living rooms, a new medium emerged: one where spatial audio could guide attention, 3D environments could embody abstract concepts, and interactive elements could turn passive viewers into active explorers. Platforms like Microsoft Mesh were already enabling presenters to craft experiences that felt less like lectures and more like shared journeys through information itself.
Yet despite this exciting momentum, VR presentations remain underutilized, especially among non-technical creators and everyday presenters who lack the tools, training, or confidence to build compelling experiences. Unlike conventional slideshows, which follow a predictable template that anyone can fill out, VR introduces entirely new challenges: designing for three-dimensional space, guiding users through complex navigation without overwhelming them, crafting intuitive interactions that feel natural, and authoring content with specialized software that often has steep learning curves. The result? Many organizations sit on the sidelines, watching others take advantage of VR while their own teams struggle to get started.
As we moved toward a more immersive future, understanding how to effectively leverage VR in communication would be crucial. This project explores the current state of VR presentations, the opportunities they present for transforming how ideas are shared and absorbed, and the key design considerations needed to make them more accessible for everyone, especially non-technical working professionals who requires engaging storytelling for daily communication.
Building a no-code VR authoring tool from the ground up
I started by asking three essential questions about the future of VR presentations. What design elements are unique to this medium, and which ones from 2D can be carried over? What barriers prevent users from authoring content in VR? And finally, how do people actually feel when they experience these presentations? These questions felt abstract at first, but I knew that without grounding them in real user needs, the answers would remain theoretical. To answer these questions and define a viable product roadmap, I executed this research through 4 strategic stages:
Stage 1: Competitive Landscape & Feature Gap Analysis
Analyzed existing VR and 2D presentation tools to extract design patterns. I identified common elements, unique spatial affordances of the medium, and critical feature gaps that traditional slide decks couldn't address, laying the foundation for our core value proposition.
Stage 2: Discovery Interviews with Power Users
Searched for excitement behind the barriers by interviewing seven professionals from education, design, and business. These deep-dive sessions uncovered specific workflow pain points and desired features, directly informing the prioritization of our initial backlog.
Stage 3: PoC MVP Prototyping
Led the end-to-end development of VRStory, a no-code authoring tool designed to solve the exact challenges identified in Stage 2. This iteration served as our MVP, translating research insights into concrete product features.
Stage 4: Evaluative User Study
Recruited 12 participants familiar with presentation software to stress-test VRStory. The resulting feedback loop validated our design decisions, revealed unexpected friction points, and provided the data necessary to refine the product roadmap for future iterations.
This rigorous research cycle resulted in a comprehensive framework for VR presentations that went beyond academic theory. By systematically mapping user needs against technical constraints, I was able to make evidence-based recommendations on feature prioritization, effectively de-risking the product development and ensuring our MVP addressed the most critical market gaps. This project demonstrated how iterative, user-centered inquiry can transform abstract concepts into a tangible product strategy ready for scaling.
From academic theory to a validated product-market fit strategy
The work concluded in two assets: empirical research that validated the viability of VR presentations, and VRStory, a functional proof-of-concept authoring tool. By systematically gathering data on user mental models and accessibility needs, I demonstrated that VR could significantly enhance presentation effectiveness when designed correctly, shifting the narrative from speculative hype to evidence-based strategy.

These findings directly addressed the "why" behind VR adoption, giving stakeholders a clear roadmap for feature prioritization. The research de-risked investment in spatial computing by proving that user friction points are solvable and that the medium offers unique value beyond 2D presentations: insights critical for any product team considering entry into this emerging market.
